The Ubumuntu Arts Festival returned to the Amphitheatre at the Kigali Genocide Memorial for its 12th edition this July, running from the 17th to the 19th. A celebration of arts and humanity, this year’s theme is “Embracing Time: Holding On, Holding Together.”
The festival is curated by Ms. Hope Azeda, McNulty Prize Laureate and founder of the Mashirika Performing Arts Media Company.
The Ubumuntu Classic, featured three consecutive artistic performances bringing together artists from around the world. Through world-class performances, powerful stories, and meaningful conversations, the festival created a space where people from all walks of life are connected through the universal language of art.
Mr. Appolon Gahongayire, speaking at the opening, on behalf of the leadership of Aegis Trust and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, reflected on the deeper purpose of the gathering and the significance of the memorial as its venue:
“This memorial is more than a place of remembrance. It is also a place of learning, reflection, and hope. Through the power of arts and culture, we can inspire dialogue, promote empathy, and strengthen the value of Ubumuntu, our shared humanity which is essential to building peaceful and inclusive communities.”
As it has been since its inception, the Ubumuntu Arts Festival remains free and open to all, reflecting its belief that art, dialogue, and shared humanity should be accessible to everyone.
Launched in 2015, the festival is held annually following the 100-day commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the outdoor Amphitheatre of the Kigali Genocide Memorial. More than a cultural event, it has become a global platform where artists and audiences come together to confront difficult histories, celebrate resilience, and imagine more peaceful futures.
The journey continues from 12–18 July 2027 under the theme: ‘REIMAGINE — Repair. Reclaim. Renew’.
To repair what has been broken in our relationships, our communities, and within ourselves.
To reclaim the voices, identities, cultures, and dreams that shape who we are.
To renew our commitment to hope, to one another, and to futures grounded in dignity, belonging, and possibility.
Because when we dare to reimagine together, we create conditions for a more humane and compassionate world.
