Christopher Muneza, a famous Rwandan musician, and over 150 from his fan club, Imanzi, visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial to remember the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, and to learn about its history.
The group began by taking a walk of remembrance towards the memorial. Upon arrival, they laid wreaths on the mass graves, which are the final resting place for over 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide, and payed their respects by observing a moment of silence. The group then proceeded to visit the memorial’s exhibition to learn about the history and causes of the Genocide, how to fight Genocide ideology and promoting peace building.
“On my side, I was touched by what I have learned here at the memorial. Visiting the memorial reminded me that I am responsible for the wellbeing of any Rwandan or person in the world. I have seen that there are many negative impacts of genocide to both people and the country. So, my task now is to encourage all my family members to come and get firsthand information rather than getting them from other people. This can be the way of fighting against what you really know its effects.” Ronald Rulangwa, member of Imanzi fan club.
“I do have my family member buried here at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It is not only the reason why I am here, but for all Rwandans killed during Genocide against Tutsi 1994. To prevent it from happening again, we have to say that once is enough and work together for the development of the country.” Clarisse Umutoni, member of the Imanzi fan club.
Muneza Christopher, the leader of the group, expressed his thoughts on the importance of the youth taking responsibility to learn and teach about the Genocide in order to prevent Genocide ideology.
“Because my career is to sing, it is easy that I can communicate the right message all over the world. So, I have come here to continue learning and get enough information to tell the people. The advice I can give the Rwandan youths is that they have to be humans and help the survivors to accept what happened in order to develop themselves.” Christopher Muneza, Rwandan Musician.
