Students and teachers of Excella School Rwanda visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial and laid wreaths on the burial place where more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are laid to rest. The aim of their visit was to remember the victims of the Genocide and gain an understanding of the history of the Genocide and how they can contribute to building Rwanda anew.

Eric Buhigiro, the school’s IT teacher, said that his father is among the victims buried at the Kigali Genocide Memorial and that the youth must contribute their passion and energy to Rwanda’s socio-economic transformation.

“It is not my first time to visit the memorial and it will not be my last because my Dad is among the victims who are buried here. The memorial exhibits show different evidence of the Genocide and should be visited by anyone who denies what took place in the country. I also think that young people should be the basis of rebuilding the county again.”

Another teacher at the school, Moses, is from Uganda and called on the people of Rwanda, especially young people, to visit memorials so they can know the truth of Rwanda’s past and take part in fighting genocide ideology.

“My message is incorporated in three words: very shocking experience. We know that many genocides have taken place around the world and that many people deny that they happened or simply don’t know. That is why we must encourage people, no matter where they live, to come and see what happened for themselves at a place like the Kigali Genocide Memorial.”
