The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has been deeply moved by his experience at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. He made this statement while writing in the guestbook after his visit.

His Excellency Modi was guided through the memorial by Honore Gatera, the Kigali Genocide Memorial Director.

Through touring memorial’s exhibits, Modi learnt more on the history of division in Rwanda, the causes, reality and consequences of the Genocide against the Tutsi and Rwanda’s efforts to foster a shared sense of national identity.

Prime Minister Modi, expressed amazement at the remarkable Rwanda’s response to the tragedy with a conscious efforts towards reconciliation and peace.

“My visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial has been a deeply moving experience. The Genocide in Rwanda was a grim reminder of the worst aspects of humanity. Rwanda’s response, as a nation, to this tragedy has been one of restraint, reconciliation and peace. I salute this conscious effort of the Rwandan Government and the indomitable spirit of the people of Rwanda. May the departed souls rest in peace,”

Modi wrote.

Prime Minister Modi, was joined by Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure, Amb. Claver Gatete, Rwanda’s Minister of Sports and Culture, Julienne Uwacu, and the Executive Secretary of Rwanda’s National Commission for the Fight against Genocide, Dr Jean-Damascène Bizimana.
