A team of 35 members of Pfizer, a global pharmaceutic corporation headquartered in New York, have toured the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about Rwanda’s past and understand more about the Genocide against the Tutsi. More than one million Rwandans were killed in the Genocide, and more than 250,000 of the victims are buried at the memorial.

The visit took place during this year’s Commemoration Week, when Rwandans and friends remember the Genocide for the 22nd time.

Like many who visit the memorial, the team found the experience very emotional. Dawn Carty, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications at Pfizer expressed her appreciation for the visit, which allowed them to understand what happened in 1994 as many of the team had not visited Rwandan before.

“Thank you for allowing us to share this experience. Truly inspiring,” Dawn wrote in the memorial guestbook.

Caroline Roan, President of the Pfizer Foundation, thanked the memorial team for hosting the group during the Kwibuka period. Kwibuka is the Kinyarwanda word for remembrance.

“It is a privilege to have the opportunity to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial during this time of remembrance. I look forward to a future of peace and hope for the people of Rwanda.”
