Invitation: Film Screening of “The Zookeeper’s Wife” at Century Cinemas, Kigali City Tower

The Embassy of the Republic of Poland and the Kigali Genocide Memorial cordially invite you to a screening of the film “The Zookeeper’s Wife”.

The film tells the incredible true story of a heroic couple, Jan and Antonina Żabiński, who saved the lives of numerous Polish Jews by sheltering them in the Warsaw Zoo. The Jewish population in Poland, one of the largest in the world, became the prime victim of the Nazi German occupation of Poland during World War II. Herded into ghettoes and then systematically murdered, the Jewish people suffered a genocidal extinction called the Holocaust.

The Żabinskis, moved by their plight, tried to save as many Jews as they could using the facilities of the Zoo they were managing. They did so, despite the fact that sheltering Jews was punishable by Nazis with the death penalty. After the war, the State of Israel awarded the couple ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ medals in recognition of their bravery.

  • When: Sunday 25 June 2017 at 4 p.m.
  • Where: Century Cinemas, Kigali City Tower

The screening will be proceeded by a discussion with:

  • Anita Kayirangwa, Kigali Genocide Memorial
  • Agnieszka Klonowiecka-Milart, Judge of the UN Tribunal for the Khmer Rouge
  • Marek Rohr-Garztecki, Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN in Nairobi
  • A rescuer who risked their life to save others during the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda
