Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo honours victims at Kigali Genocide Memorial

Posted in News

On 27 August 2025 the Kigali Genocide Memorial received H.E. Daniel Chapo, President of Mozambique, who paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Accompanied by his delegation, President Chapo laid a wreath in memory of the more than one million lives lost. He then toured the memorial’s exhibitions, where he reflected on the history, ideology, and devastating consequences of the genocide. The visit also offered him an opportunity to learn about Rwanda’s remarkable journey of unity and reconciliation since 1994.

In the memorial guest book, President Chapo wrote a moving message of remembrance and solidarity:

“In this place of deep and painful memory, we bow with immense respect before your suffering and the eternal silence of the victims. Your history is a solemn reminder that humanity must never forget what intolerance can cause. However, it is also a beacon of hope, a testament to the unbreakable resilience of the Rwandan people. May the peace that Rwanda abides today be your most powerful answer, and may it serve as a lesson for all of Africa and the world. Your lives were not in vain.”

The Kigali Genocide Memorial is deeply honoured to have welcomed President Chapo and his delegation. His visit reaffirms the shared responsibility of nations to preserve memory, uphold justice, and ensure that the lessons of the Genocide against the Tutsi guide efforts for peace across Africa and beyond.
