Posted in News

The Kigali Genocide Memorial is hosting an ‘Ubumuntu Exchange’ discussion on how memorials, remembrance and the preservation of historical evidence can help prevent mass atrocities.

Event Details

  • Name: Ubumuntu Exchange on Remembrance and Genocide Prevention
  • Place: Kigali Genocide Memorial
  • Time: 6:30pm, September 1, 2016

After mass atrocity such as the Genocide against the Tutsi, the Holocaust and the Cambodian Genocide, there is need for the evidence and memories to be preserved for future generations. One way of collecting the memory of a nation is through building memorials and teaching the world about the history, causes and effects of mass atrocities and the dangers of hate propaganda.

This Ubumuntu Exchange will discuss the importance of preventing mass atrocities through remembrance and memorials by examining the experience of Rwanda and the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

After a screening of the short film, “Our Memory, Our Future”, produced by the Genocide Archive of Rwanda, join us for a conversation with Kigali Genocide Memorial Manager Honore Gatera, Genocide Archive of Rwanda Collection Manager Aline Umugwaneza and Aegis Trust Programme Manager Anita Kayirangwa.
